flower power or something
[OVERVIEW]
Vileplume has access to the valuable “Double Powder” combination of Sleep Powder and Stun Spore, letting it support teammates like Golem and Charizard through spreading status. It can differentiate itself from other status spreaders by being able to go on the offensive and run Swords Dance, due to its stats generally being solid outside of Speed. This lets it perform decently as a cleaner against paralyzed teams. Vileplume also boasts some solid defensive utility, acting as one of the better switch-ins to Golem while boasting a Toxic immunity.
However, Vileplume faces heavy competition from other Double Powder spreaders such as Venomoth and Exeggcute. The former boasts a better Speed tier and movepool, and the latter has better typing as well as a better defensive utility by means of its Psychic-type. Vileplume’s horrible typing leaves it weak to the likes of Mr. Mime, Moltres, Ninetales, and Fire Blast Charizard while only having one notable resistance to Water. Its low Speed makes things more difficult for Vileplume, as it struggles to find set up opportunities, and makes it vulnerable to partial trapping users such as Charizard, Moltres, Rapidash, and Ninetales. Vileplume struggles to find a solidified niche in RBY NU, and thus, should not be an initial consideration for a competitive team.
[SET]
name: Defensive Pivot
move 1: Sleep Powder
move 2: Stun Spore / Swords Dance
move 3: Mega Drain
move 4: Body Slam / Hyper Beam
[SET COMMENTS]
This set aims to cripple opposing Pokemon with paralysis and sleep for its teammates to take advantage of. Sleep Powder allows Vileplume to create set up opportunities for itself. Stun Spore is great for paralyzing Ground-types such as Golem who otherwise deter paralysis. Mega Drain gives Vileplume a method of recovery as well as a STAB option to 2HKO the likes of Golem and Kabutops. Body Slam is a good option for chipping down opponents while having the chance to spread paralysis. Swords Dance can be run over Stun Spore to make Vileplume surprisingly strong. Using Hyper Beam over Body Slam further enhances its strength, doing great damage to the likes of Clefable, Blastoise, and Mr. Mime, with it even being able to OHKO the latter at +2.
Vileplume has very little room for variation due to its mediocre movepool. Toxic can work as an option to help against partial trapping users such as Dragonair. Due to its access to the Double Powder combination, Vileplume is able to give openings to multiple dangerous offensive Pokemon. Swords Dance Charizard is a premier example of a Pokemon that can take advantage of Vileplume's status, as it helps enable Charizard to sweep. Golem is also able to check Fire-types while appreciating paralysis support from Vileplume. It can also act as a secondary paralysis abuser alongside Swords Dance Vileplume. Blastoise makes for a particularly good partner, as it is a very solid Fire Spin absorber, and can generally take attacks from the aforementioned Fire-types. Paralysis spreaders like Mr. Mime and Clefable are good partners, as they allow Vileplume to more easily find set-up opportunities with Swords Dance.
